89 die in a landslide at Wayanad (Kerala)
Over 400 people could be trapped under the soil
Wayanad (Kerala) – On 30thJuly, the heavy rains in Wayanad caused landslides at 4 places, killing 89 people and injuring 116. 400 individuals are missing, who could be trapped under the soil. Rescue work is ongoing by the NDRF, Fire Brigade, and local administration. The Army has been called too. Two Airforce helicopters are on the rescue duty and a Control room has been set up for the entire rescue operation.
1. Landslides have occurred in Wayanad’s 4 villages i.e., Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha. In 2019 too, heavy rains had caused landslides in these villages. 17 persons had lost their lives then while 5 were never found.
2. Wayanad’s Mundakkai village has been damaged the most in the landslides. Reports stated that over 250 people are trapped under the soil. Many houses have been drifted. 65 families were living here. 35 workers working at the nearby tea garden are also missing.
3. Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X about the incident, ‘Distressed by the landslides in parts of Wayanad. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones and prayers with those injured. Rescue ops are currently underway to assist all those affected. Spoke to Kerala CM and assured all possible help from the Centre in the wake of the prevailing situation there.’
