Bangladesh awards Teesta river project to India instead of China
Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Bangladesh has chosen India over China for an important project related to the Teesta river. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that India will complete this project worth USD 1 bn. In a press conference in Dhaka, Hasina said that China was ready, but she wanted India to work on this project. This decision of Bangladesh will end India’s security concerns. Recently, PM Sheikh Hasina visited China. Hence, there were discussions that this project might go to China.
Bangladesh wants to manage the waters of the Teesta River better. This 414 km long river originates in India and flows into Bangladesh. Bangladesh intends to conserve Teesta water and manage it well. India had also made a proposal to Bangladesh for this project.
