Guidelines issued in the wake of violence during the Muharram period

Islamabad, Pakistan – Karachi’s Deputy Superintendent of Police, Tariq Islam, has issued guidelines for officers, urging them not to go on duty alone due to the recent attacks on police personnel. The advisory also warns that government officials may be targeted during the Muharram period. Police have been instructed to avoid wearing uniforms and boots while returning home after duty. Muharram often sees violence between Sunni and Shia communities, leading to attacks on police during this period, which is the reason behind these directives.

Deployment of Armed Forces in Pakistan

Authorities in Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad had requested the deployment of the military to maintain law and order. Consequently, the government has approved the deployment of armed forces across the country to ensure security during Muharram.

Currently, stringent security measures are in place across various regions in Pakistan. In Punjab, 502 locations have been declared ‘sensitive areas,’ and the military has been deployed at these sites.

Why is There Violence During Muharram ?

Muharram is a significant festival for Shia Muslims, commemorating the martyrdom of the Prophet’s grandson. During this time, Shia Muslims hold large gatherings and processions. The deep-seated animosity between Shia and Sunni Muslims often leads to extremist Sunni groups targeting Shia processions. Therefore, the threat of bomb blasts or suicide attacks remains high in Pakistan during this period.
