Saran (Bihar) – A bridge over the Gandaki River collapsed here on the morning of 4^thJuly. The villagers say the locals had built that bridge 15 years ago with personal funds. The exact cause of the bridge collapse is still not known. This is the tenth bridge collapse incident in the state in the last fortnight. This is the third incident of the bridge collapse in Saran in the last 24 hours. On 3^rdJuly, 2 small bridges collapsed in the Janta Bazar and Lahladpur areas in Saran District. District Magistrate Aman Sameer informed that a high-level inquiry had been ordered to find the reasons behind the frequent bridge collapses. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court requesting the Bihar Government to direct a

structural audit of the construction of bridges. Advocate Brajesh Singh, has filed a PIL requesting a high-level expert committee to be formed to monitor the bridges as per the norms of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Bridges built during the British period have lasted for more than 100 years, while bridges built after Independence are collapsing withing 10-15 years !

Bridges built by the British stay in good condition even after 100 years, while bridges built after independence do not last even for 10 years is a shame for Indians and all party rulers.
