  • Supreme Court had slammed IMA
President of IMA R. V. Ashokan

New Delhi – Dr RV Asokan, the Chief of Indian Medical Association (IMA) issued a public apology for the remarks he made concerning an observation by the Supreme Court during a recent hearing involving IMA. In a press release by IMA, Dr Asokan has clarified that it was never his intention to undermine the Court’s dignity.

What is the matter ?

A writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court against ‘Patanjali Ayurved Limited’ about the company’s alleged misleading advertisements. IMA was one of the parties to the petition. During the hearing, the Supreme Court had remarked that IMA needed to put its house in order and about the unethical practices of doctors in their private practice. In an interview given to PTI, Dr Asokan had commented that the stand taken by the Supreme Court was unbecoming of its prestige and had expressed his discontent.

Supreme Court had slammed Dr Asokan

Taking note of the interview, the Supreme Court had stated, “We expected more sense of responsibility from you. You cannot vent your feelings against the Court in the press like this. What made you suddenly go like this ?” Dr Asokan had submitted an affidavit tendering apology which was not accepted by the Supreme Court, asking Dr Asokan to tender a public apology; therefore, Dr Asokan has now issued a public apology.

Supreme Court had criticised private medical practitioners

The Supreme Court has stated, “Many complaints were received about the unethical practices of the members (doctors) of IMA. Patients are losing faith in doctors. Doctors not only prescribe over-priced medicines to patients but also recommend avoidable tests. (The Government or IMA will not pay heed to the Supreme Court’s comments; therefore, the Court should take stringent action by cancelling their certificates, to prevent exploitation of common man – Editor).

Editorial Perspective

Media had exaggerated the news about SC asking Baba Ramdev to tender an apology for misleading advertisements. The SC had also rebuked the President of Indian Medical Association (IMA), one of the petitioners and asked him to tender an apology. That news was suppressed though. It shows how anti-Hindu machinery works among the media.
