US blacklists former Bangladesh Army Chief accused of corruption
Washington (US) -The former Army Chief of Bangladesh, Aziz Ahmed who is involved in corruption, is blacklisted by the US. Ahmed was the Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh till 23rd June 2021. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said that people of Bangladesh had lost faith in the Institutions of their country because of the corruption by the former General Aziz Ahmed. The former Army Chief helped his brother to evade accountability for criminal activities in Bangladesh. He interfered with the public process and indulged in significant corruption. Aziz along with his brother awarded illegal military contracts. He took bribe in exchange of Government appointments for his personal gain.
Reacting to the US announcement Ahmed said that all the allegations were false, and the restrictions imposed on him were unfortunate.
US committed to strengthen the Governance in Bangladesh
Miller clarified, US is committed to strengthen the Democracy and the Rule of Law in Bangladesh. He said that the ban reaffirms this commitment.
