Ranchi (Jharkhand) – The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids in connection with the State Rural Development’s tender scam and recovered unaccounted cash worth Rs 30 crore from the house of the Rural Development Minister’s Alamgir Alams’ personal secretary Sanjiv Lal’s domestic help. A lot of jewellery has also been found as per the report. ED raided six places in this context.
Action is being taken by the ED against the State’s suspended Chief Engineer Virendra Ram and his close associates. ED had arrested Virendra Ram last February after finding irregularities in the implementation of a few schemes, including money laundering. It is said that the recent raids could lead to the arrest of Alamgir Alam. The involvement of 70-year-old Alamgir Alam, who was a Congress MLA from Pakur for four terms and is presently the Minister for Rural Development, is suspected. He said that his secretary Sanjiv Lal had served as secretary to 2-3 other ministers earlier, and he was not aware of such a huge amount recovered from his servant’s house.

Five-year-old issue
The scam was initially unearthed in 2019 when a junior engineer Suresh Prasad Verma of Rural Development Ministry was arrested for demanding a bribe of Rs 10,000. Cash of Rs 2 crore was recovered from his house at that time. Last February, ED raided 24 places connected to Chief Engineer, Virendra Ram. Investigations started based on the papers found in the raids and later, he was arrested. Besides cash worth Rs 30 lakhs, jewellery worth Rs 1.5 crore were seized from his place.
