Rohith Vemula was not a Dalit : Telangana Police
Rohith committed suicide out of fear that legal action could be taken if it is revealed that he is not a Dalit
Hyderabad (Telangana) – Eight years after the death of Rohith Vemula, the Telangana police have filed a closure report in the case stating Rohith was not a Dalit. The police informed the High Court that Rohith knew that he was not a Dalit. He committed suicide fearing that legal action would be taken against him if his caste identity was revealed.
Meanwhile, the police also cleared the then Secunderabad MP Bandaru Dattatreya, Member of Legislative Council N Ramachander Rao, UoH Vice Chancellor Appa Rao, ABVP leaders, and many political leaders of any wrongdoing in the case.
The report was submitted to the police on 21st March. It had said that Rohith had achieved academic success by submitting a Scheduled Caste certificate.
“It is absolutely wrong, a police officer cannot decide on a person’s caste. We are going to meet Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Saturday. We will file a protest petition and other options will also be taken up,” Vemula’s brother, Raja Vemula and Rohith’s mother said.
“As some doubts have been expressed by the mother and others of the deceased Rohit Vemula on the investigation conducted, it has been decided to conduct further investigation into the case,” Telangana DCP said in an official statement.
Editorial Perspective
The Congress party, which advocates being secular and supporter of Dalits, had created ruckus after Rohith’s suicide. Now people should question Rahul Gandhi and the Congress. |
