Telangana High Court rejects Waqf Board’s claim on Hotel Marriott
50 years long fight of Waqf Board
Hyderabad (Telangana) – For the past 50 years, the Waqf Board had claimed in the Telangana High Court that the famous five-star hotel ‘Marriott’ was built on its land. The court, however, gave a big relief to the hotel and termed the Waqf Board’s claim as ‘misconduct’. The hearing was held before a bench of Telangana High Court Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Anil Kumar Jukanti.
In the year 1964, a person named Abdul Ghafoor filed a case under the Waqf Act, 1954 against the hotel, then known as the ‘Viceroy’, claiming that the Waqf Board had jurisdiction over the hotel. The Waqf Board kept the matter in legal limbo for almost 50 years. In 2014, the board issued a newspaper notice to Hotel Marriott and threatened legal action. The director of Hotel Marriott also filed a statement in court against the Waqf Board’s threat of legal action. In this reply, the Waqf was blamed for violating the old orders of the court. Finally the matter reached the High Court. The court dismissed the Waqf Board’s claim as illegal from the outset.
